Calcite : CaCO3

Ton Mawr Quarry, Taff's Well, Cardiff (Mid Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK

Yellow to reddish calcite crystals on plate of matrix. The crystals are well defined with slight growth pattern striations on the surface. Selective faces have reddish color, probably due to inclusions (hematite?). No damage. Overall size of mineral specimen: 8x5x3 cm. Size of individual crystals: 5-10 mm.

Calcite : CaCO3

Ton Mawr Quarry, Taff's Well, Cardiff (Mid Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK

Matrix coated completely on one side with amber-colored, scalenohedral calcite crystals. The calcite crystals have a reddish color on the terminations due to minute hematite inclusions. No damage. Overall size of mineral specimen: 8x4x4 cm. Size of individual crystals: 3-8 mm.

I collected this piece on my first field collecting trip in the UK, in early June of 2000. The calcite crystal is a twin with hematite inclusions measuring 30 X 35 mm. The entire specimen measures 80 X 70 mm.
