Ray Mica Mine (Wray Mine), Hurricane Mt., Burnsville, Black Mtn-Bowlens Creek Area, Spruce Pine District, Pisgah National Forest, Yancey Co., North Carolina, USA Beryl with Musovite in Quartz; crystal 3.4 cm (both parts combine) x 1.7 cm, matrix 6.0 cm long; collector/photographer Arthur Koch A nice but not terminated green beryl crystal with some accessory muscovite. I'm uncertain as to whether these are two separate crystals, or one that broke apart at some point during formation. |

Ray Mica Mine (Wray Mine), Hurricane Mt., Burnsville, Black Mtn-Bowlens Creek Area, Spruce Pine District, Pisgah National Forest, Yancey Co., North Carolina, USA 19mm wide morganite beryl crystal with pale amazonite feldspar on a matrix of quartz. The morganite crystal has only pyramidal and basal pinacoid faces - it lacks prism faces. The luster of the crystal is matted and the crystal is backlit to show the color better. Morganite is especially rare at this location, occurring only in the most ... |

Ray Mica Mine (Wray Mine), Hurricane Mt., Burnsville, Black Mtn-Bowlens Creek Area, Spruce Pine District, Pisgah National Forest, Yancey Co., North Carolina, USA A single skeletal ferrocolumbite crystal intergrown with oligoclase feldspar. Maximum dimension of the ferrocolumbite crystal is 8.5cm. The small brown patches between limbs of the ferrocolumbite crystal are small muscovite grains. Some quartz is present in the feldspar at the right side of the photo. Skeletal formation and parallel growth of ... |

Ray Mica Mine (Wray Mine), Hurricane Mt., Burnsville, Black Mtn-Bowlens Creek Area, Spruce Pine District, Pisgah National Forest, Yancey Co., North Carolina, USA A crudely formed but complete 4.7cm long crystal of ferrocolumbite in oligoclase feldspar. The crystal thins in stairsteps toward the top of the photo and has small amounts of residual feldspar in the steps. This is a side view of the same specimen that contains the skeletal crystal shown for this location in another photo (photo 4316). Portions ... |

Ray Mica Mine (Wray Mine), Hurricane Mt., Burnsville, Black Mtn-Bowlens Creek Area, Spruce Pine District, Pisgah National Forest, Yancey Co., North Carolina, USA 15x11x3.5mm ferrocolumbite crystal on oligoclase with spessartine. The reflective portion of the crystal was in contact with quartz whereas the rougher portions of the crystal were in contact with feldspar and are coated with a thin layer of sericite. Crystal was exposed when enclosing rock was broken away. Collected by, photographed by, and in ... |

Ray Mica Mine (Wray Mine), Hurricane Mt., Burnsville, Black Mtn-Bowlens Creek Area, Spruce Pine District, Pisgah National Forest, Yancey Co., North Carolina, USA 7.2x3.2x2.8cm crystal of ferrocolumbite in oligoclase. The crystal is highly skeletal in habit with two main arms, between which is more oligoclase. The first arm makes up the lower part of the crystal, and the junction of the two arms is present at the top of the specimen. The opposite arm is on the back of the specimen and fingers of it can be ... |

Ray Mica Mine (Wray Mine), Hurricane Mt., Burnsville, Black Mtn-Bowlens Creek Area, Spruce Pine District, Pisgah National Forest, Yancey Co., North Carolina, USA Field of view 22cm. White to pale buff pollucite makes up most of the specimen. Microcline var. amazonite is present as blocky partial crystals with rims of lepidolite. A small lepidolite veinlet is also present within the pollucite, a frequent association for pollucite occurences in general. Massive gray quartz with some iron oxide staining ... |
