Copper : Cu, Calcite : CaCO3

Calumet, Houghton Co., Michigan, USA

Translucent calcite with native copper inclusions. The calcite prevents the copper from oxidizing, keeping the copper a bright metallic color. Overall size of mineral specimen: 5x5x3.5 cm. Size of individual crystals: 3-10 mm.

Calumet & Hecla Mine, Calumet, Houghton Co., Michigan, USA

The aesthetics of this piece are absolutely incredible! The specimen features a well-formed, large 8+ cm tetrahexahedral copper crystal perched above a matrix of massive to crystallized copper. Several smaller 3 to 4 cm copper crystals, also, grace the matrix. Perhaps most interestingly, a “copper skull" about 5 cm in length sits ...

Copper : Cu, Datolite : CaB[OH|SiO4]

Calumet, Houghton Co., Michigan, USA

This is a fascinating old Michigan specimen, to me. What you have is a very large specimen of datolite, infused with copper so that it is actually tinted a coppery color - and, surrounded by copper-rich ore. Datolites have become so sought-after and hard to obtain, for whatever reason. Though they do not compete in aesthetics with a fine crystal ...

Copper : Cu

Red Jacket shaft, Calumet & Hecla Mine, Calumet, Houghton Co., Michigan, USA

12.0 x 11.0 x 8.5 cm. An IMPRESSIVE and DRAMATIC CABINET copper "skull" from the Red Jacket Shaft of the Calumet and Hecla Mine, near Calumet, Michigan. This is a very 3-dimensional cast, with the copper forming around conglomerate cobbles. The cobbles were dissolved away and further tectonic activity caused the back of the cast or "skull" to bend ...

Copper : Cu

Calumet & Hecla Mine, Calumet, Houghton Co., Michigan, USA

10.8 x 9 x 6 cm. Copper has a beauty all its own, and this large specimen has well-crystallized Copper intermixed and on calcite. The patina is also very good. Many of the crystals range from 1-2 cm in size, which is outstanding given the sharpness as well. An excellent specimen from one of the world’s great localities.

A neat miniature from this classic locality! Ex Gene Tribby collection #1003 with label and data card dating the specimen to 1967. Ref: Rocks & Minerals:58:109 & 64:150.
