The gold crystals are interconnected throughout in elongated, irregular shapes. Looks beautiful under magnification. This famous mine is now closed forever. This showy piece is RICHLY covered with nests filled with tiny, scintillating gold wires. The gold is etched out of the cream-colored calcite that fills the vugs in the porphyritic host rock. There are two of these balls here, each about 1.2 cm, and all gold. The specimen is made particularly dramatic and aesthetic by how these two puffballs of gold are isolated on the andesite matrix.
