Allanite, Ankerite : Ca(Fe2+ ,Mg,Mn2+)(CO3)2, Ilmenite : Fe2+TiO3

Martin Marietta Quarry (11th Street Quarry), Hickory, Catawba Co., North Carolina, USA

12mm allanite crystal in ankerite. The crystal was exposed by dissolving enclosing ankerite with acid. The remaining ankerite develops a rough, hackly surface. The black linear features to the left of the allanite are flat platy ilmenite crystals veiwed nearly edge-on. Some glassy smoky quartz is present on the right side of the picture. From an ...

Almandine : Fe2+3Al2[SiO4]3

Martin Marietta Quarry (11th Street Quarry), Hickory, Catawba Co., North Carolina, USA

Trapezohedral almandine garnets in quartz. Larger crystal is 2.3cm top to bottom. Unusual for the locality in having been recovered from a quartz vein rather than an ankerite vein. Also rather large for the location. Collected by, photographed by, and in the collection of Keith Wood.

Almandine : Fe2+3Al2[SiO4]3, Ankerite : Ca(Fe2+ ,Mg,Mn2+)(CO3)2

Martin Marietta Quarry (11th Street Quarry), Hickory, Catawba Co., North Carolina, USA

A 1.6mm wide garnet partially exposed in an ankerite vein within biotite schist. The main crystal is 1.6cm wide, but the outlying garnets to the upper left are also portions of the same crystal, suggesting a skeletal or highly embayed habit. Specimen was not etched, but naturally broke to reveal this crystal. Collected by, photographed by, and in ...

Ankerite : Ca(Fe2+ ,Mg,Mn2+)(CO3)2, Albite-Anorthite Series

Martin Marietta Quarry (11th Street Quarry), Hickory, Catawba Co., North Carolina, USA

2.5 x 3.5 mm ankerite crystal on a bed of small plagioclase crystals. Crystal is nearly transparent. Part of a one-time find of exceptional ankerite crystals, unusual for the locality. Collected and photographed by Keith Wood.

Ankerite : Ca(Fe2+ ,Mg,Mn2+)(CO3)2, Albite-Anorthite Series

Martin Marietta Quarry (11th Street Quarry), Hickory, Catawba Co., North Carolina, USA

Translucent ankerite crystals to 4.5mm with plagioclase crystals. Ankerite is common at this locality as cleaved masses filling veins but rare as well-formed crystals. Collected by, photographed by, and in the collection of Keith Wood.
