Elbaite (Var: Cuprian Elbaite) : [Na][(Li,Al)3][Al6][(OH)3|OH|(BO3)3|Si6O18], Quartz : SiO2

Paraíba, Northeast Region, Brazil

A gorgeous blue translucent terminated prismatic crystal of tourmaline measuring 4.9 cm in length is set nicely upon a massive quartz matrix with other much smaller blue tourmalines. The strange color is due to copper. Measures 5.2 x 3.0 x 1.0 cm in size overall. No damage. Ref: MacDonald, D.J. and Hawthorne, F.C. (1995) Cu-bearing tourmaline ...

São José da Batalha, Salgadinho, Paraíba, Northeast Region, Brazil

Well defined and transparent Elbaite crystal, with excellent color, totally natural, more blue on the scepter base. Terminal faces are well defined and with no damage. We would like to emphasize its form because these cuprian Elbaites from Paraíba, well-known for their excellent color, rarely are seen in complete crystals.

Excellent crystallization for this variety, well known as "Paraíba" in gemology, whose characteristic is that it is almost unknown in defined crystals. For that reason, the piece must be considered as very unusual. The sample is an irregular prismatic crystal with a neat pinacoidal termination, transparent, bright and of excellent color. This ...

Elbaite (Var: Cuprian Elbaite) : [Na][(Li,Al)3][Al6][(OH)3|OH|(BO3)3|Si6O18]

Batalha mine, São José da Batalha, Salgadinho, Paraíba, Northeast Region, Brazil

Translucent crystal of the famous Paraiba Blue tourmaline (elbaite with high copper content). The crystal is not terminated. Paraiba tourmalines are hard to obtain because security at the mine ensures all material goes to the lapidaries. Overall size of mineral specimen: 22x6x6 mm. Size of individual crystals: 22 mm.
