Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)

Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

Single crystal of purple sodalite var. hackmanite 12 mm across on white quartz matrix. The hackmanite is quite well crystallized with complex termination. Fluoresces and phosphoresces under UV illumination. Overall size of mineral specimen: 3.5x2.5x2 cm. Size of individual crystals: 12 mm.

Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S), Scapolite

Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

Terminated crystal of purple hackmanite in crystallized, yellow scapolite (probably Meionite) matrix. The hakmanite crystal fluoresces orange under UV illumination. No damage. Overall size of mineral specimen: 7x4x3 cm. Size of individual crystals: 15 mm.

Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)

Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

It is EXCEPTIONALLY difficult to find a large hackmanite crystal with this level of transparency and shiny luster! Most are opaque and dull. This is a SIZEABLE 2.5-cm crystal perched atop matrix, complete on all sides. (Hackmanite is LW fluorescent.) 6.5 x 5.5 x 3 cm

Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)

Koksha Valley (Kokscha; Kokcha), Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

A single roughly terminated crystal of hackmanite (1.2cm across) sits up on a matrix of marble and winchite. There are other smaller crystals and areas of hackmanite within the specimen too. The colour variation is very good: ranging from royal purple in daylight, to fire orange under UV, emitted blue under dim light after UV, and sulphur yellow ...

Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)

Koksha Valley (Kokscha; Kokcha), Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

A beautiful compound and gemmy crystal of hackmanite dominates this specimen of marble and numerous hackmanite crystals. The true daylight colour of the hackmanite is deep royal purple which changes to deep blue emitted light when the crystals have been "charged" with UV light. The main crystal is 1.6cm X 1cm and is translucent into the matrix. ...

Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)

Koksha Valley (Kokscha; Kokcha), Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

A rough piece of matrix comprising calcite and blades of winchite contains a crystalline group of hackmanite. For the species there are some good crystal faces and the overall crystal size is 1.8cm max. The daylight colour is a pale royal purple, bright red orange under LW UV, and yellow phosporescence.

Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)

Koksha Valley (Kokscha; Kokcha), Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

A piece of massive marble, hackmanite and winchite reveals a fair mass of crystalline hackmanite and one sharp 4mm crystal. Lots of tenebrescence - my camera cannot get the phosphorescence part, and also light mauve to royal purple colour change when placed in daylight.

Sodalite (Var: Hackmanite) : Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)

Koksha Valley (Kokscha; Kokcha), Badakhshan (Badakshan; Badahsan) Province, Afghanistan

A matrix of marble and winchite contains some minor crystals of gemmy sodalite var. hackmanite. Perched on top is a 1.7cm X 1.8cm crystal of gemmy transparent hackmanite. The colour variation is very good: ranging from royal purple in daylight, to fire orange under UV, emitted blue under dim light after UV, and sulphur yellow phosphorescence. ...
