Tantalite-(Mn) : MnTa2O6, Albite : Na[AlSi3O8]

Konar (Kunar; Konarh; Konarha; Nuristan) Province, Afghanistan

2.4 x 1.8 x 1.6 cm. This is a superb and beautiful, competition-level, tabular manganotantalite crystal nestled in bladed albite. This pristine beauty is from the Allan Young Thumbnail Collection, who has won the prestigious Desautels Award for Best Rocks, with thumbnails such as this.

Mawi pegmatite, Laghman (Lagman; Nuristan) Province, Afghanistan

MANGANOTANTALITE with Quartz and Cleavelandite, Mawi, Laghman Province, Afghanistan. A well formed tabular, black crystal, 2.7 cm long, perched in front of two large pale smokey quartz crystals and next to a bed of cleavelandite. Tantalite-(Mn) : MnTa2O6

Mawi pegmatite, Laghman (Lagman; Nuristan) Province, Afghanistan

1.8 x 1.4 cm.

A superb, doubly-terminated, transparent, deep garnet-red xl. Because of the brittleness of the mineral it is seldom found in this undamaged state.

Tantalite-(Mn) : MnTa2O6

Darra-i-Pech (Darra-e-Pech) Pegmatite Field, Nangarhar (Ningarhar) Province, Afghanistan

A good sized Manganotantalite crystal. This crystal has a very good form, despite the contacted portion on the left. This is common for Tantalite as they almost always are found along the walls of the pockets.

Tantalite-(Mn) : MnTa2O6, Albite (Var: Cleavelandite) : Na[AlSi3O8]

Darra-i-Pech (Darra-e-Pech) Pegmatite Field, Nangarhar (Ningarhar) Province, Afghanistan

Portion of a pegmatite pocket with platy crystals of cleavlandite variety of albite up to 2 cm. Most importantly, there are two manganotantalite crystals (4 and 8 mm) on the cleavlandite. The manganotantalite crystals are lustrous black, with good form. Overall size of mineral specimen: 8x6x4 cm. Size of individual crystals: 4-30 mm.

Tantalite-(Mn) : MnTa2O6

Darra-i-Pech (Darra-e-Pech) Pegmatite Field, Nangarhar (Ningarhar) Province, Afghanistan

A big, chunky, Tantalite crystal. The crystal is contacted on the back & on the bottom, which is typical of this species as they are almost always found embedded in the pocket walls.

Darra-i-Pech (Darra-e-Pech) Pegmatite Field, Nangarhar (Ningarhar) Province, Afghanistan

6.7 x 4.7 x 4.5 cm. A DRAMATIC Pech, Afghanistan combination specimen. A sharp, lustrous, 1.7 cm, steel-gray manganotantalite crystal is nestled and partially hidden at the base of an aesthetic, vertical cluster of pearlescent, sharply hexagonal, tan muscovite books jauntily perched atop a feldspar matrix. This is a highly representative ...

Darra-i-Pech (Darra-e-Pech) Pegmatite Field, Nangarhar (Ningarhar) Province, Afghanistan

7.1 x 5.7 x 4.7 cm. This interesting piece is something that is seldom seen from here, a beautiful red manganotantalite crystal. This doubly-terminated tantalite is perched diagonally on a doubly-terminated quartz crystal, the whole cluster a floater with no attachments or damage. The lustre of the tantalite, which is 3 cm diagonal or 2 cm on edge ...
