Speen Ghar, Nangarhar (Ningarhar) Province, Afghanistan 2.1 x 1.8 x 1.3 cm. A fabulous specimen of magnetite for a thumbnail collector, with super-sharp crystals (to 0.8 cm) with epitaxial elevations on their faces that make them wonderfully aesthetic. From the Al Young collection (he won the Desautels trophy a few years ago for his thumbnails). |

Payún volcano, Altiplano de Payún Matru, Mendoza, Argentina On the specimen coexist two generations of crystals of Hematite. The first one has arborescent growths of octahedral crystals that are pseudomorphs after Magnetite (the variety Martite). On those octahedrons is formed a second generation of very bright laminar crystals of Hematite. Aside from its mineralogical interest, the specimen is notably ... |
