Olenitsa River, White Sea Coast, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Northern Region, Russia 10.1 x 7.1 x 5.5 cm. These specimens have confused collectors since they first came out in the early 1990s as calcite after something embedded in concretions, then glendonite after ikaite, then as calcite after ikaite; and now classified as calcite variety thinolite, which is a pseudomorph after an unknown mineral. Olenitsa River, White Sea Coast, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Northern Region, Russia A strange, biomorphic-looking pseudomorph of calcite var. thinolite, from Russia. The sharp orange-brown pseudomorphed crystals look like a crown or head of hair atop a pear-shaped object. This is a dramatic example of this sort of specimen, with a really wonderful overall form. 7.8 x 4.7 x 4.6 cm |
