Krumlbach valley, Hüttwinkl valley, Rauris valley, Hohe Tauern Mts, Salzburg, Austria

9.0 x 6.4 x 6.3 cm. Sagenite is a variety of intricately reticulated red rutile named in 1796 by Saussure. "These small crystals usually cross at the same angles, so as to form a mesh-like network of parallelograms". A beautiful and bright, 2.0 cm, golden-brown meshwork of sagenite rests aesthetically and horizontally at the tip of a ...

Rutile, so-called sagenite, a network of acicular crystals aligned in three directions at 120°. I hypothesize that these planar groups of crystals are oriented (topotactic) replacements of ilmenite. Field of view is 14 mm wide.
