Penfieldite : Pb2[OH|Cl3]

Sierra Gorda District, Tocopilla Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile

Penfieldite crystals are often elongated tapered hexagonal crystals which come to a sharp point. Crystals in the same vug may also exhibit a broad basil pinacoid. These crystallized over a base which is rich in boleite. At certain angles it doesn't take much boleite to lend a blue cast to the otherwise colorless crystals. Photomicrograph © Saul ...

Penfieldite : Pb2[OH|Cl3]

Sierra Gorda District, Tocopilla Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile

The penfieldite crystals are associated with boleite which often lends a blue hue. Here the color of the crystals are effected by an unknown substance with a pinkish hue. Photomicrograph © Saul Krotki 2004 (.0535.1). Field of view 1.5 mm. Krotki Micromount Collection.

Penfieldite : Pb2[OH|Cl3]

Sierra Gorda District, Tocopilla Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile

Penfieldite crystals vary from those in which a long thin tapered hexagonal prism comes to a point and those which form basal pinacoids. Close up shown here. Photomicrograph © Saul Krotki 2004 (.0538.3). Field of view 2.0 mm wide. Krotki Micromount Collection.

Penfieldite : Pb2[OH|Cl3]

Sierra Gorda District, Tocopilla Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile

Rich coverage of rare penfieldite crystals on matrix with blue boleite. One of the best found. The penfieldite is colorless, six-sided, long tapering crystals, with minute striations. The penfieldite fluoresces yellow under UV illumination. Overall size of mineral specimen: 30x30x25 mm. Size of individual crystals: 1-3 mm.
