Pumpellyite-(Mg) : Ca2MgAl2[(OH)2|SiO4|Si2O7] · H2O, Quartz : SiO2

Copper Falls Mine, Copper Falls, Keweenaw Co., Michigan, USA

A last piece of the one single specimen that had a natural fault in the middle, and cracked apart on the way to me in the mail (though to tell the truth, it was a clunker and I would have trimmed it anyhow)...A superb thumbnail was the result! Note that this specimen was presented to Washington Roebling (1837-1926) on or near his deathbed as a ...

Pumpellyite-(Mg) (Var: Chlorastrolite) : Ca2MgAl2[(OH)2|SiO4|Si2O7] · H2O

Phoenix Mine, Phoenix, Keweenaw Co., Michigan, USA

Chlorastrolite is Michigan's official state gemstone and is known locally as "Isle Royale Greenstone". Scientifically, they are a form of the mineral pumpellyite. Available analyses suggest the Michigan pumpellyites are magnesium-dominant, intermediate solid solution series between pumpellyite (Mg+), pumpellyite (Fe2+) and pumpellyite (Fe3+). ...
