Spinel : MgAl2O4

Alluvial gold mine, Carapooee, Victoria, Australia

Black spinels hand-sorted from heavy mineral concentrates. These are some of the smaller spinels from Carapooee. Some appear brightly polished, pitted and quite black. Others are duller, slightly brownish and with no pitting. Some of the smallest crystals are obviously octahedral. Field of view: 12mm.
