Staurolite : (Fe2+,Mg,Zn)1.5-2Al9[O6|(OH,O)2|(SiO4)4]

Broken Hill, Yancowinna Co., New South Wales, Australia

Total size of mineral is 5mm x 5mm x 5mm. This was found in the hills around Broken Hill not in any particular mine.

Staurolite : (Fe2+,Mg,Zn)1.5-2Al9[O6|(OH,O)2|(SiO4)4], Biotite, Muscovite : KAl2[(OH)2|AlSi3O10], Andradite : Ca3Fe3+2[SiO4]3

Cattle Creek, Mary Kathleen district, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

This piece of muscovite schist has a bit of everything in it. Staurolite (very dark brown, a twinned one top center), biotite (black, hexagonal) and some tiny little red garnets. Specimen 15cm across.

Staurolite : (Fe2+,Mg,Zn)1.5-2Al9[O6|(OH,O)2|(SiO4)4], Biotite, Muscovite : KAl2[(OH)2|AlSi3O10]

Cattle Creek, Mary Kathleen district, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

While not as nice as the standard staurolites to come from this locality, this staurolite is one of my favorites for being such a big boy! 8cm end to end, with one end kind of knocked off. The smaller inclusions and porphyroblasts are neat books of biotite, in a muscovite schist.

Staurolite : (Fe2+,Mg,Zn)1.5-2Al9[O6|(OH,O)2|(SiO4)4]

Cattle Creek, Mary Kathleen district, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

Three staurolite crystals in muscovite schist matrix. The round hole in the foremost staurolite would have held a garnet. Field of view 3cm.

Staurolite : (Fe2+,Mg,Zn)1.5-2Al9[O6|(OH,O)2|(SiO4)4]

Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Northeast Region, Brazil

3.0 x 1.5 x 0.8 cm. A very sharp, lustrous, chocolate-brown staurolite crystal from an uncommon Brazilian locality and the Fred Pough Collection. This complete all-around and pristine crystal has textbook crystal form. Excellent material for the species and locality, with a fine provenance.
