Strontianite : SrCO3, Fluorite : CaF2

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A diamond drill core composed of white strontianite and fluorite. Collected from the Allied Chemical Company's core library that was dumped in 1986. Because that company owned the Minerva Oil Company's holdings - including the Minerva No. 1 mine - and because strontianite was abundant in that mine, this specimen is most likely from there as well. ...

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A section of a diamond drill core composed of pink strontianite. Collected from the Allied Chemical Company's core library that was dumped in 1986. Because that company owned the Minerva Oil Company's holdings - including the Minerva No. 1 mine - and because pink strontianite was found in that mine, this specimen is most likely from there as well. ...

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A 4.5 x 5 x 5 cm cluster of tightly grouping colorless strontianite crystals. Crystallized pretty much all around; an excellent rich example for the species from this closed locality! Some tipping is present, typical of pretty much all Illinois strontianite specimens, but overall in great shape I think. Ex Gene Tribbey collection #1057 with ...

Strontianite : SrCO3, Calcite : CaCO3

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A neat hemispherical spray of sparkling colorless acicular strontianite crystals measuring 3.2 x 3.1 cm in size is set perfectly on top of a crystallized matrix of calcite. Measures 4.3 x 4.3 x 3.3 cm in size overall. Upon close examination the strontianite crystals are transparent. There is minor bruising to the calcite crystal matrix. The ...

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

4.9 x 2.4 x 2.1 cm. Strontianite is a rare carbonate mineral (strontium carbonate) and one of only a handful of known strontium minerals. Crystals are rarer than the massive forms. Typical specimens have spiky, minute crystals in radiating aggregates or tufts, exactly as you see here in this fine miniature from the Minerva. Ex. Consie Prince ...
