Buckwheat Pit (Southwest Opening; Buckwheat Mine), Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA Thorutite - an approx. 14 x 8 x 8 cm feldspar and or calcite and dolomite matrix with hundreds of tiny dark brown or black 1 mm spear like crystals. Collected by C. O’Neill at the Buckwheat Dump in 2005. This specimen registers 50,000 cpm on a Ludlum Model 3 with 44-9 probe. |

Buckwheat Pit (Southwest Opening; Buckwheat Mine), Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA Thorutite - a close-up of minute spear-like dark brown to black crystals within a vug bordering a weathered vein running through the dolomite matrix. These crystals may have been naturaly etched free from the matrix due to weathering. Collected by C. O'Neill in 2006 at the Buckwheat Dump. |
