Bortolan quarry, Poços de Caldas, Poços de Caldas plateau, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil

5.0 x 3.0 x 2.1 cm. Rare, discrete microcrystals of villiaumite, from an old find in Brazil. John White purchased this from Carlos Barbosa in 1978. Such discrete (if small) crystals are extremely rare, both for the species and for Brazil as a source of it, and I believe this was a one-time find. Ex. John White Collection.

Demix-Varennes quarry, Saint-Amable sill, Varennes & St-Amable, Lajemmerais RCM, Montérégie, Québec, Canada

FOV 4.7 x 5.5 mm. Modris B. coll (self collected?)
This is as close to a “real” xl (as opposed to a cleavage fragment) as I ever saw from STA. But clearly the villiaumite has been in the rain and it’s hard to say if it really is euhedral. My guess is “No”.

Villiaumite : NaF

Mont Saint-Hilaire, Rouville RCM, Montérégie, Québec, Canada

2.4 x 2.2 x 2.0 cm. Villiaumite is a RARE sodium halide found in alkali massifs and this sharp, lustrous, carmine-red cube of solid villiaumite beautifully accented with white streaks is highly representative of the species and famous locality - Mt. St-Hilaire. The white streaks are tension crack fillings in a very nice pattern. Ex. Carl Davis ...

FOV 7.1 x 4.7 mm. Modris B. coll (ex JPB ca 2003)
This is clearly not euhedral and has an obvious solution cavity. But the color is beuautiful.

Another example of “real” looking xls (as opposed to cleavage planes). But these have clearly been in the rain and it’s hard to be sure.
