Small augite crystals that would go unremarked if they were not from a rather exotic locality. Specimens are from the British Museum of Natural History #1930,205 (1975). Scale at bottom of image is an inch with a rule at one cm.

Portland Harbour Trust Quarry, Cape Sir William Grant, Portland, Victoria, Australia

From the basalt quarry near Portland, a blackish crystal of augite with tabular greyish crystals of andesine. Specimens from this locality may often have some clay mineral coating. Field of view: 12mm.

This is a large cluster of dark green Augite crystals with some small yellow/metallic Pyrrhotite crystals that occupy small vug like cavities. Most of the piece was covered with orange calcite which was forcibly removed with acid, which revealed the Pyrrhotite. The augite has almost a right angle cleavage a very light green streak. Here is a cluster of small green Augite crystals on weathered white Calcite. The cluster is 6 by 4.6 cm and is 3.8 cm tall. Most crystals are in the 1 centimeter range. It is from the Diamond Lake locality. From M. Adamowicz collection.

Augite : (Ca,Na)(Mg,Fe2+,Al,Fe3+,Ti)[(Si,Al)2O6]

Yates mine, Otter Lake, Pontiac RCM, Outaouais, Québec, Canada

Dramatic specimen of a well crystallized black augite crystal perfectly perched on orange calcite matrix. Though the augite crystal has an irregular surface, typical of this occurrence, the crystal is terminated and faces are clean. Ex. A. Stevenson collection #362. Overall size of mineral specimen: 25x28x20. Size of individual crystals: 18 mm.
