Witherite : BaCO3

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A superb, elegantly tapered crystal of witherite the likes of which you seldom see in terms of form and perfection. It is 3-dimensional, equant and complete all around. It has just a minor contact point on the back, at the "pinch." Otherwise, it is a floater. The crystal is translucent: a quality that is seldom seen in the species for crystals of ...

Witherite : BaCO3

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

One of the world's best known localities for this barium carbonate is the now closed Minerva No. 1 Mine in Illinois. The miniature shown here is excellent. A colorless terminated soft white somewhat lustrous complete witherite crystal measuring 21 x 22 x 27 mm in size is sitting straight up from a 4.5 x 2.7 x 4.1 cm matrix. This shows nicely ...

Witherite : BaCO3

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Several translucent white intergrown Witherite crystals forming a divergent group; well formed with a resinous lustre and horizontal striations on the crystals, the largest measuring over 3 cm in length. The corner of a small dark purple Fluorite cube is visible on the back on the specimen. This crystal form is similar to the Witherites from ...

2.1 x 1.4 x 1.3 cm. Here is a fine thumber of an Illinois classic! Here are two intergrown, sharp hexagonal crystals of witherite, canting out from one another aesthetically.

Witherite : BaCO3, Fluorite : CaF2

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Rare specimen of lustrous Green Witherite (Nickel-colored) with
Fluorite on matrix! A very small find of these appeared in the mid-1960's
and I've seen maybe two or three in total. This is the specimen that I
consider to be the best and it is in excellent shape with no detractions.
From the Minerva #1 Mine, Hardin County, Illinois.

Witherite (green): Vasco Trancoso Collection and photo. Very rare! Aesthetic and lustrous sprays of green Witherite (Nickel-colored) with Fluorite on matrix! A very small find of these appeared in the mid-1960's and have been reported during last years mineral shows maybe two or three in total. This is the specimen that I consider it to be one of ...

Witherite : BaCO3

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

This is a fine example of a classic Illinois witherite, in a nice size. While they can be really dull, this one shows a fine luster bouncing off the stepped faces. (Fluorescent LW and SW, white.) 4.9 x 3.7 x 3.2 cm

Witherite : BaCO3

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A large, excellent example of an Illinois classic. Light creamy-golden color, good luster and a fine crystal structure. The specimen has a very good display face that doesn’t show the matrix contacts on the bottom and side. I sold this many years ago, about a decade , to Dr. Helen Holmes, and it is from her collection that it comes back now. It ...

Witherite : BaCO3

Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Most witherite specimens in the market exhibit a long prismatic form ending in a pinacoid. This complete crystal is short prismatic and the pinacoid is much broader. It is lustrous, translucent, and has a pleasing, pastel tan coloration. VERY FINE miniature for this now defunct locality, of one of its rare minerals 4.2 x 4.1 x 2.3 cm
