Awaruite is a nickel-iron alloy-bearing rock named after its place of origin, Josephine County in southwestern Oregon. These awaruite pebbles occur as detritus in several streams that originate and flow across the Josephine Peridotite. This pebble/nugget weighs 13 grams. Josephine Creek, Josephine Creek District, Josephine Co., Oregon, USA Polished section of 1/4 pebble of "josephinite" - the specific serpentine-awaruite rock from its type locality. It is well visible, that finegrained silicate-awaruite matrix of the rock is crosscut by veinlets of pure awaruite. FOV is ~12x10 mm. Pavel M. Kartashov collection (#2225) and photo. |

Josephine Creek, Josephine Creek District, Josephine Co., Oregon, USA 1.5 cm stream-rounded placer nugget. Labeled as "oregonite", but this specimen is visually identical to the much more common awaruite, and has not been tested to confirm identity. They are easily distinguished, as awaruite is strongly magnetic, while oregonite is not. S034-25 Excalibur Mineral specimen. |

Josephine Creek, Josephine Creek District, Josephine Co., Oregon, USA This mineral looks like an ugly brown pebble! It is listed as josephenite, terrestrial nickel-iron. I took a close-up showing some orange patches on it, which I assume is rust. Specimen #4897. Field of view 1 cm. Take a look at the location list for josephenite (awaruite) - one of the locations is the moon! |
