Multiple photos availableEnstatite (Var: Bronzite) : (Mg,Fe2+)2[SiO3]2

Kraubath, Leoben, Styria, Austria

This specimen consists of a grouping of intergrown crystals of Bronzite that exhibit characteristic brassy-golden iridescence when viewed at varying angles. The effect is actually a bit similar to what is seen in Labradorite - essentially this specimen has a lively golden "labradorescence". Ex. Stephen Varni Co. Lapidaries (New York City), Ex. ...

Enstatite (Var: Bronzite) : (Mg,Fe2+)2[SiO3]2

Bare Hills Copper Mine (Smith Avenue Copper Mine), Bare Hills, Baltimore Co., Maryland, USA

9.6 x 7.5 x 4.9 cm

A classic from a very old American locality that is a varietal of enstatite but apparently still a valid species. Note the curving, bronzy, well-defined crystals. From the noted W.W. Jefferis (1820-1906) Collection. This was a "copper mine located about 1 mile NW of Mt Washington and about 3 miles NW of Baltimore. Started ...

Enstatite (Var: Bronzite) : (Mg,Fe2+)2[SiO3]2

Summit Rock, Klamath Co., Oregon, USA

The enstatite crystal measures 0.9 mm in height and when viewed along different crystallographic axes, exhibits distinct dichroism from greenish to amber brown . Pure enstatite is not dichroic but becomes so when Fe joins the Mg in the chemical composition. Collected by Kelly Starnes, 8/14/03. Photomicrograph by Saul Krotki (.0473). Krotki ...
