Rheniite : ReS2

Kudriavy (Kudryavyi) volcano, Iturup Island, Kuril Islands, Sakhalinskaya Oblast', Far-Eastern Region, Russia

Rheniite is the only known mineral with Rhenium as its primary metallic constituent and as such is a fascinating species. It occurs at a volcanic vent in this remote area of Russia, and scientists have to climb down into hot crevasses to find the stuff. That being said, it is usually pretty ugly and massive material in terms of specimen appeal on ...

Rheniite : ReS2

Kudriavy (Kudryavyi) volcano, Iturup Island, Kuril Islands, Sakhalinskaya Oblast', Far-Eastern Region, Russia

Tiny, metallic flakes of rheniite on matrix. Field of view about 4 mm. The Russian mineralogist, Pavel M. Kartashov, that gave me the specimen told me that during the volcanic "rheniite-eruption" flakes of rheniite fell like snow and covered the ground. The specimen is in the micromount collection of OT. Ljostad.

This was one of two specimens that I bought from Gunnar Farber right before we left fall Denver this year. (9/2008) I like this specimen because the Rheniite sparkles in the matrix quite pleasingly.
