Scorpion Mine, Tsavo National Park, Voi, Taita Taveta District, Coast Province, Kenya 1.4 x 1.1 x 0.9 cm. This is a large, nearly-gem quality tsavorite garnet on matrix! It measures one centimeter from side-to-side and top-to-bottom, and is about half a centimeter in thickness. The weight is estimated at around 6 carats! These have become nearly impossible to get in matrix - they are so much rarer than diamonds, or even rubies, ... |

Merelani Hills (Mererani), Lelatema Mts, Arusha Region, Tanzania This tsavorite crystal is unusually wellformed and complete for the species - they tend to be partial crystals, in this size range, more often that not. It sits on graphite matrix. The color is unusual in that it is more dark and olive-colored compared to the traditional bright green hues, but the form makes up for this and it is still, i think , ... |
