Olenitsa River, White Sea Coast, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Northern Region, Russia 10.1 x 7.1 x 5.5 cm. These specimens have confused collectors since they first came out in the early 1990s as calcite after something embedded in concretions, then glendonite after ikaite, then as calcite after ikaite; and now classified as calcite variety thinolite, which is a pseudomorph after an unknown mineral. This is a strange, ... Mindat.org Photo of the Day - 31st Dec 2006 |

Olenitsa River, White Sea Coast, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Northern Region, Russia A strange, biomorphic-looking pseudomorph of calcite var. thinolite, from Russia. The sharp orange-brown pseudomorphed crystals look like a crown or head of hair atop a pear-shaped object. This is a dramatic example of this sort of specimen, with a really wonderful overall form. 7.8 x 4.7 x 4.6 cm |

Olenitsa River, White Sea Coast, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Northern Region, Russia A very interesting pseudomorph of Calcite replacing a starburst-like cluster of crystals of the rare the Calcium Carbonate mineral Ikaite. This very aesthetic specimen is the only one that I've seen of it's kind. specimen size = 3 x 2.7 x 2 cm. |
