Undisclosed pegmatite locality, Burnet Co., Texas, USA 18cm wide specimen of graphic granite containing crystalline inclusions of dark reddish-violet chlorophane fluorite. This particular fluorite luminesces a sky-blue color at room temperature as shown in the thumbnail below. This specimen was self-collected in February of 2007 from a new rare-earth pegmatite in Burnet County, Texas. |

Badu Hill pegmatite, Llano Co., Texas, USA Thermoluminescent fluorite (chlorophane) emitting blue-green light when heated to 220°C in a porcelain dish atop a laboratory hot plate. The magenta color is the result of a second red emission line at the higher temperature (330°C) at the center of the dish where it contacts the hotplate. Badu Hill pegmatite, Llano Co., Texas, USA 220 gram chunk of thermoluminescent dark purple fluorite showing some euhedral faces from the Badu Hill Pegmatite in Llano County, Texas. Fracture and cleavage surfaces are coated with a thin layer of dark red hematite and yellow limonite that exhibits an iridescent play of color. This coating rarely survives washing. |
