Definition of mafic
Pertaining to or composed dominantly of the ferromagnesian rock-forming silicates; said of some igneous rocks and their constituent minerals.
Note: According to the IUGS recommendations for igneous rock classification there are no "mafic rocks", only ultramafic rocks.
