Definition of mud cake
The material filling the cracks, crevices, pores, etc., of the rock or adhering to the walls of a borehole. The cake may be derived from the drill cuttings, circulating drill mud, or both; it is formed when the water in the drilling mud filters into porous formations, leaving the mud ingredients as a caked layer adhering to the walls of the borehole.
