Definition of ultramafites

Collective name for igneous rocks containing 90% or more mafic minerals; includes peridotites and pyroxenites.

In the Earth's crust, most ultramafic rocks form as cumulates, and accordingly ultramafic plutonic rocks are common, whereas ultramafic volcanic rocks are very rare. The Earth's mantle is almost entirely made of ultramafic rocks.
