Definition of widow maker
Loose and dangerous rock/ore in an underground mine. Loose, adhering, overhead rock has to be identified after a blast by tapping on the ceiling with a scaling bar or other implement. Once identified, the loose rock must either be scaled off or roof bolted to secure it and prevent the making of another widow.
