The alluvial tin deposits north of the St Austell china clay district at Goss Moor, Tregoss Moor, Molinnis Moor, Redmoor and Breney Common were the largest and most important alluvial tin workings in Cornwall. Though worked from prehistoric times, large scale mining occurred in the early twentieth century, using suction and bucket ladder dredges.
Red Moor was one of the more important alluvial deposits; although few early records remain (Henwood 1873) described sections at Upper & Lower Creany, the former being the old Wheal Prosper Stream Works. Although gold occurred with the tin, this was generally microscopic (Dines 1956)
Redmoor (Red Moor) is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Part of the site is a Nature Reserve of the Cornwall Trust for Nature Conservation.
