Geological Context:
The geology of the Cascais municipality (map 02.CA) is largely shaped by the Sintra volcanic massif, which clearly marks the municipality from a geological, orographic, and climatic perspective. The materials that emerge in the municipality date back to the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras, with the oldest being from the Lower Cretaceous (140 million years ago). These are represented by formations such as Maceira, Rodízio, Cresmina, Cabo Raso, and Guincho, consisting of rocks like limestone, sandstone, marl, clay, and are most prevalent in the western part of the municipality. These materials accumulated in a deeper marine environment and progressively evolved, due to sediment infilling, into a shallower marine, reef, fluvial, and lacustrine environment. These Mesozoic formations form the Cascais platform, which gently slopes southward from the Sintra mountains. In some areas, this platform is covered by more recent formations, such as sands transported by ocean and wind action, leading to their accumulation and the formation of present-day dunes, beach sands, and consolidated dunes (Oitavos). This platform is intersected by some narrow valleys formed by watercourses, notably the Vinhas stream and the Foz do Guincho stream, where alluvial deposits occur.
The gradual opening of the Atlantic Ocean resulted in the stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust, which facilitated the ascent of magma to the surface, giving rise to the Lisbon volcanic complex (85 million years ago). Today, there are still residual reliefs corresponding to basaltic chimneys, which are more prominent in the eastern part of the municipality and contribute to some movement in the landscape, notably at Cabeço do Mouro, Alto de Bicesse, Pau Gordo, among others. However, as mentioned earlier, the geological event that unmistakably characterizes and shapes Cascais is undoubtedly the Sintra volcanic massif. This magmatic intrusion, dating back approximately 80 million years, led to the ascent of magma currents that cooled within the Earth's crust and gave rise to outcrops of granite, gabbro, diorite, sienite, and others.
This magma ascent created strong compression in the surrounding materials, leading to deformation and metamorphism. As a result, it is in the area surrounding this massif that a greater number of faults are observed, which significantly create discrepancies between different layers of materials. These faults predominantly have a NW-SE orientation.
Finally, the most recent materials in the municipality, apart from alluvial deposits, date back to the Miocene (20 million years ago) and outcrop in the eastern part of the municipality, roughly in a north-south-oriented strip extending from the São Julião da Barra fort to Sassoeiros.
