Geographically Hortavær consists of 360 skerries, small islets and islands W of Leka Island. Geologically, the area belongs to the Hortavær Igneous Complex (465 Ma), a part of the Bindal batolith (482-425 Ma)
Complex is built of multiple sheets of gabbro, diorite, monzonite and syenite, which are cut by granite dikes (Barnes et al. 2003, 2005). The rocks are exposed on numerous small islands and skerries that extend over an area of c. 9 x 5 km (Prestvik & Barnes 2007).

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Late/Upper Ordovician : 455.7 ± 8.4 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
