The Foster mine was on the south-east shore of Glen Lake which is now occupied by a mill. The first mill on the property was the Cobalt Central Mill, which operated from 1907 to 1910, and again from 1912 to 1919. Tailings from the mill were deposited in the lake. A second mill, the Foster Mill, later named the Penn Mill, operated from 1957 until 1986 when it burned down. A new mill was built on site and is currently used by SMC Canada as a custom mill, recovering metals from recycled materials.
The deposit was first mined by Foster Cobalt Mining Co. from 1906-1909. After that 6 other companies operated the last being Agnico Mines starting in 1958. The main shaft on the deposit was called the “Foster Shaft” which is 210ft deep with 3 levels. The mine closed down sometime around 1965.
Total production was approx. 1,200,000 oz. Ag; 460,000 lbs. Co; 22,000 lbs Ni; and 24,000 lbs. Cu.
