Opened by the Universal Steam Coal Company during the 1890s, in 1913, Universal Colliery was the scene of the UK's worst underground mining disaster when 439 men and boys were killed in the an explosion, or died from the effects of the afterdamp. One man lost his life the following day by a fall of stone while he was fighting a fire on the Main West Level. A previous explosion in 1901 had resulted in the death of 82 of the 83 men underground at the time and a number of the recommendations from the resulting Inquiry had still not been implemented!

The Colliery was taken over by the Lewis Merthyr group and closed in 1928. It was subsequently sold to the Powell Duffryn Company who used it to ventilate the Windsor Colliery in Abertridwr. The buildings were demolished in 1963 but large heavily overgrown dump remains.
