In 1873, Joseph Henry Collins (1841-1916), pioneering Cornish mineralogist, mining engineer and geologist, founder of the Mineralogical Society and author of several important books on Cornwall's mines and minerals began his connection with the St Austell area, managing tin mining operations at Rock Hill.
Outputs here are given under a variety of names: Rocks Tin Mine (SX015582), Rocks & Treverbyn, Rock Hill United, Rock and Goonbarrow, and Rock Hill Mine (the opencut) - 1839, 1852-73, 551 tons of black tin: 1882 & 188327 tons: 1906, 3 tons
The grid reference marks the ore dressing floors, where two stacks and the foundation walls of some mine buildings remain. The workings lay immediately to the southwest of this place, but are now largely obscured by the Goonbarrow and Rock Hill China Clay pits. In 1960, the shallow levels of the mine were uncovered in the southern part of the latter pit.
