Sunk in the 1850s and originally known locally as "Browns Pit", in 1866 the colliery was taken over by the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co Ltd. By 1918 the workforce numbered 804.
The colliery closed in 1965 and the tips were subsequently removed and landscaped.
Unusual for the coalfield, the majority of the millerite here appears to have crystallised in narrow joints in the ironstone. Typical specimens are well represented in the collection of the national Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
