Silberloch Mine (Silberloch vein), Orschwiller, Ribeauvillé, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France

(Mine du Silberloch (Filon du Silberloch), Orschwiller, Ribeauvillé, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France)

Ancient lead mine, started in 1527 and abandoned a few years after. Around 1850, the deposit was re-worked for lead, silver and china clay for a short period of time. The mine worked two lead- and zinc-bearing veins, consisting of brecciated quartz, baryte and fluorite, formed by hydrothermal deposition in NE-SW trending fractures of the Vosges fault zone. The host rocks are strongly silicified, as is typical for the contact zone between the Vosges granites and the sediments of the basement.
Located near Orschwiller, about 12 km NE of Ribeauvillé. The site of this mine is now landscaped.
