Bitschwiller-les-Thann, Vallée de la Thur (Vallée de Thann), Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France
Ancient iron mining area, first noted in the late 15th century. Larger scale explorations continued after 1739, when the smelter at Bitschwiller-les-Thann was built, and they declined after 1836, when it was demolished. All mines in the area were abandoned by 1860. The veins, usually consisting of quartz and trending in roughly southwestern directions, were richly mineralised in solid hematite.
