Barbarossa cave (Falkenburg cave; Rottleben cave), Rottleben, Kyffhäuser Mts, Thuringia, Germany
(Barbarossahöhle (Falkenburger Höhle; Rottlebener Höhle), Rottleben, Kyffhäuser, Thüringen, Deutschland)
A karst cave, formed by leaching of an anhydrite body along clefts and subsequent collapse of the surrounding rocks. The cave was discovered in 1865, when it was hit by a prospection adit driven in search of copper ores. A second adit, started from inside the cave, did finally hit a copper seam, but this was too poorly mineralised. Today, the cave is open to visitors.
