The Monongahela consists of two iron mines, a small "Old" and a large "New." Work began on the Old (in NE-NE Sec. 36) in 1892, with small shipments in 1901 and 1903. The New mine, in SE-NE, shipped from 1916 through 1934. From 1952 - 1956, the adjacent Columbia mine grew onto the Monongahela property, removing the ore through its own shafts. Owners included Oglebay, Norton and Co., Pittsburgh and Lake Angeline Co. (1901), Jones and Laughlin Ltd (1902), Hanna Furnace Co., Hanna Iron Ore Co., and Republic Steel (1951).

Property description: NE-NW, N1/2-NE, and SE-NE Sec. 36, T43N-R33W. This L-shaped 160 acres lies between N46º4'59", N46º5'12", W88º22'1", and W88º22'58", and between N46º4'46", N46º4'59", W88º22'1", and W88º22'20".
