One of the earliest mines in the area, the Nanaimo mine was started as an open pit in 1881 by the Nanaimo Mining Company. Underground workings were developed from one shaft in 1882, and a second pit was added in 1884. The property was folded into the Beta Mine in 1889 by the Mackinnon Brothers, and was later taken over by Mineral Mining Co. 373,765 tons of ore were shipped during 1882 - 1908.
The mine is within W1/2-SW Sec. 26 T43N-R35W, which is the 80 acres between N46ΒΊ5'14", N46ΒΊ5'40", W88ΒΊ39'11", and W88ΒΊ39'30".
