A small mine, and one of only two in the gold belt to work below sea level, Prince of Wales worked intermittently, and initially for lead, from 1836 to 1903, with further exploratory work undertaken in the 1970's.
Prince of Wales Mine recorded an output of 107 tons of lead and 110 ounces of silver in 1856, 18 tons of lead in 1857 and 63 ounces of gold in 1864. In 1853, a particularly rich pocket of gold was encountered, the "gold sink", at 40 ft below deep adit. Although of very limited occurrence, the lode here was said to assay at almost 1000 ounces per ton, or £38,000 per fathom.
