An iron mine in magnetite ore. Located on both sides of the Black River, about 1½ miles (2 km) South of Chester. Started about 1760; restarted 1868-1873, 1873-1884, 1885-1888 & 1890-1896. A major mine exploiting an ore deposit consisting of 12 to 15 ore shoots (veins) from 1 to 12 feet (.3 to 4 meters wide) by 2,700 feet (900 meters) long. Workings featured a large number of shafts & pits (14 or 15 open cuts [1880]) and a shaft to 125 feet deep. Specifically named openings were: Coalhouse pit; Andrew's cut; East cut; Foley openings; George vein opening ( 3 parallel deposits).
