Hewitt Mine, Sterling Lake, Town of Warwick, Orange Co., New York, USA

Latitude: 41°9'7"N
Longitude: 74°14'59"W
An iron mine in magnetite ore located on a knoll about 1½ miles (2.3 km) NE of Ringwood, NJ (fomerly Pompton Township & now Ringwood Borough)and approximately 250-300 yards north of the state line in the Town of Warwick, NY. Started before 1868 and reopened 1880. Featured a pit 25 feet deep by 8 feet wide (1880).

Hotz (1952) describes the site: The Snyder and Hewitt mines are in New York a little more than a mile east-northeast of the Peters mine and just north of the New Jersey-New York boundary. Here are several shallow pits, a partly
flooded opening 150 ft .long and 2Q ft wide, and another flooded pit
60 ft long and 20 ft wide. The Hewitt mine was on the site of the
shallow pits south of the larger openings.

The Hewitt mine is obviously a very small working, not much more than a prospect. Given the stature of Abram S. Hewitt in the Ringwood area iron industry it seems surprising that a mine bearing his name was so inconsequential.
