A former surface and underground W mine located in secs. 17, 18, 20 & 21, T10S, R16E, about 1 mile ENE of Apache Peak and about 2 miles SW of Campo Bonito, on National Forest land. Discovered in 1943 and operated during the period 1943-1944. Owned by E. H. Molson (1959). Operator E. H. Molson And E. J. Ewing (Year Of Info 1943 1944).
Mineralization is pyrometasomatic silicification and dolomitization of breccia, with marble near the ore. Ore bodies are tabular to irregular massive, striking N of W, dipping 30-60S, at 12.19 meters thick and 66.96 meters long. Hosted in Escabrosa Limestone. Related structures are the Mogul fault zone. Bock faulting trending NNW; regional trends: post-Cretaceous and pre-Pliocene thrust and high angle normal and reverse faults. Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusives and consequent faulting.
Precambrian granite underlies ore to the NE of the Mogul Fault. A fault trending N of W brings Paleozoic and Precambrian sedimentary and metamorphic rocks on the south into contact with Precambrian granite on the north. The zone of brecciation is about 50 feet thick. At the Pure Gold Mine, breccia is silicified and mineralized.
Workings include two adits, at 175 and 88 feet long; 2 shallow shafts; two inclined shafts up to 35 feet deep; and one open cut 160 by 30 feet. Additionally, an adit of 315 feet long with a 40 foot deep winze are situated above the Cody Tunnel. Production equivalent to 11,815 short ton units of WO3 (1 short ton unit = 20 lbs of WO3 containing 15.862 pounds of W), or 85 MT of contained W.
