Description: Bluish green xls, found in the late 1980s; (Fe+Mg)/Mn = 0.54. All other Broken Hill johannsenites analysed were actually Mn-rich hedenbergites. However, no specimen should be simply regarded as being johannsenite because it comes from the North Mine. All specimens should be tested to confirm they are either Mn-rich hedenbergite or johannsenite. Specimens which have not been confirmed, should be considered suspect until tested.

The mineral rapidly darkens to greenish grey then dark grey after exposure to sunlight for several minutes. These properties are similar to those of the poorly described silver mercury iodide tocornalite".
