Mahopac Mines (Hill Mine; German Flats Mine), German Flats, Putnam Co., New York, USA

Ref.: The Minerals of New York City & Its Environs, New York Mineralogical Club Bull. Vol. 3, No. 1, Manchester, J.G. (1931): 32 & 80; NY State Museum Bull. Nos. 249-250, Magnetic Iron Deposits of SE NY, Clarke, John M. (Sep-Oct 1921): 124-125; Rocks & Min.: 15:126. These mines are located just West of lake Mahopac on the road from US highway 6 to Kent Cliffs, near German Flats & about 1¾ miles North of Mahopac Falls.. The mine was abandoned in 1895 when the mining operation encountered a fault and the orebody was lost. The ore consisted of 4 beds 90 feet in breath overall and 10 to 15 feet (3.1 to 4.8 meters) wide each.
