Big Pit was sunk in 1860 to help service the Blaenavon Ironworks (opened 1789). It formed part of the overall Blaenavon mine and was, until its closure in 1980, the oldest working mine in south Wales.
The pit (open daily from March to December) is now the site of the National Mining Museum of Wales. There is a visitors centre and tours descend 300 feet to visit the underground roadways and experience elements of a a miner's life.
A landscaped coal tip still remains.
