Iron mines located literally under brewster, NY, with one mine located behind the hotel. Both mines joined underground and in later years were known as the Cheever & Durant iron mines. Started 1810 & closed 1820; reopened 1845 & closed 1875. Finally reopned early Feb 1880 & closed Aug 1880. Produced 50,000 tons of ore (don't stay at the hotel!).
